Some 570 people from several countries gathered at the Basharat Mosque of Pedro Abad on Friday and Saturday to celebrate the Twenty-fifth Annual Convention of the Ahmadiyya Community in Islam.

The convention was attended by the supreme leader and fifth Caliph of the religious community, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, who delivered several speeches which were broadcast live through television to more than 150 million faithful and more than 170 countries.

Speaking in Urdu language on various aspects of the topic, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad explained verses that are mentioned in the Koran, the sacred book of the Muslim community, about the treatment of women and improving the human quality to "become better people.”

His speeches were being simultaneously translated in Spanish, Arabic and Bengali.

“The fifth Caliph of the Ahmadis addresses spiritual issues, not any political and worldly matters,” explained a representative of the community to this newspaper.

The supreme leader of the Ahmadis asked for prayer for the two members of the community recently murdered in Pakistan, a country the community originally belongs to but they are persecuted by the current power structure.

Since 1984, 107 Ahmadis have been killed and 719 detained.

Ahmadiyya Movement in Islam was founded by Mirza Ghulam Ahmad of Qadian (India) in 1889.

Among those in attendance were representatives from several provinces.

This is the second visit of the Caliph to Pedro Abad. The previous was in 2005.
