Faith and Loyalty: The code of conduct | Ahmadi Muslims live by certain expectations

Hadhrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, the founder of the worldwide Ahmadiyya Muslim Community claimed in 1891 that on the basis of Divine revelations he was the Promised Messiah and Mahdi whose advent had been foretold by Muhammad, the Holy Prophet of Islam (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and by the scriptures of other faiths. His claim constitutes the basis of the beliefs of the Ahmadiyya Muslim community.

By Mirza Ghulam Ahmad Qadiani (1835 - 1908)
The members of my Jama‘at (Community), wherever they might be, should listen with attention. The purpose of their joining this Movement and establishing the mutual relationship of spiritual preceptor and disciple with me is that they should achieve a high degree of good conduct, good behaviour and righteousness. No wrongdoing, mischief, or misconduct should even approach them. They should perform the five daily Prayers regularly, should not utter a falsehood and should not hurt anyone with their speech. They should be guilty of no vice and should not let even a thought of any mischief, or wrong, or disorderliness, or turmoil pass through their minds. They should shun every type of sin, offence, undesirable action, passion, and unmannerly behaviour. They should become pure-hearted and meek servants of God Almighty, and no poisonous germ should flourish in their beings….
Sympathy with mankind should be their principle and, they should fear God Almighty. They should safeguard their tongues and their hands and their thoughts against every kind of impurity, disorderliness and dishonesty. They should join the five daily Prayer services without fail. They should refrain from every kind of wrong, transgression, dishonesty, bribery, trespass, and partiality. They should not participate in any evil company. If it should be proved that one who frequents their company does not obey God’s commandments or is not mindful of the rights of people, or is cruel or mischievous, or is ill-behaved, or is seeking to deceive the servants of God Almighty by speaking ill or abusively of them, or is guilty of imposture towards the persons with whom they have entered into a covenant of bai‘at, it should be their duty to repel him and to keep away from such a dangerous one.
They should not design harm against the followers of any religion or the members of any tribe or group. Be true well-wishers of everyone, and take care that no mischievous, vicious, disorderly, or ill-behaved person, should be ever of your company, or should dwell among you; for such a person could at any time be the cause of your stumbling.
Do not attack anyone improperly, and keep your passions under complete control. If you take part in a discussion, or in an exchange of views on a religious subject, express yourself gently and be courteous. If anyone misbehaves towards you, withdraw from such company with a greeting of peace. If you are persecuted or reviled, be mindful that you should not meet stupidity with stupidity, for otherwise you will be counted in the same category as your opponents.
God Almighty desires that you should become a jama‘at that should set an example of goodness and truthfulness for the whole world. Hasten to exclude everyone from your company who sets an example of evil, mischief, provocation and ill-behaviour. He who cannot dwell among us in meekness, goodness and piety, using gentle words and comporting himself in ways of good conduct, should depart from us quickly, for God does not desire that such a one should dwell among us. He will diemiserably, for he did not adopt the way of goodness. Therefore, be alert, and be truly good-hearted, gentle and righteous. You will be recognised by your regular attendance at Prayer services and your high moral qualities. He who has the seed of evil embedded in him will not be able to conform to this admonition.

Pakistan: Intolerance

"Today we are a country ruled by a corrupt elite without any rule of law or transparency. We cannot allow any discrimination against minorities in Pakistan, be they Ahmedis, Christians, Hindus, Sikhs, Parsis or Buddhists."

Malik Tariq Ali | Dubai

The religious intolerance exhibited in Faisalabad involving violence against Ahmedis must be condemned by all sane Muslims of Pakistan. These acts of violence are not in accordance with the Quaid’s vision of Pakistan.

Perhaps very few people are aware that one of the stalwarts who supported the Quaid-e-Azam was Zafarullah Khan, an Ahmedi, while the majority of the so-called clergy, that has now assumed the role of custodians of the ideology of Pakistan, opposed him. The need for the creation of Pakistan arose when it was feared that the Hindu majority would economically subjugate the Muslim minority. However, the fact that religious extremists and fanatics have gained a foothold in Pakistan is food for thought.

Had we adhered to the vision of the Quaid, this would never have happened here. Pakistan was created to function as a modern, democratic and welfare state and that is the path it must adopt. Today we are a country ruled by a corrupt elite without any rule of law or transparency. We cannot allow any discrimination against minorities in Pakistan, be they Ahmedis, Christians, Hindus, Sikhs, Parsis or Buddhists. Every Pakistani, irrespective of their caste, creed, colour, faith or sex, must enjoy equal rights.

The culprits responsible for violence against minorities must be given exemplary punishment.

A New Report Finds Most Terrorists Uneducated on Islam | loonwatch.com

There is a new report that came out last week that was put together by David Shanzer of Duke University, Charles Kurzman of North Carolina University and Ebrahim Moosa of Duke University, titled Anti-Terror Lessons of Muslim-Americans. It is an excellent report and a must read, that amongst other things finds that a majority of Muslims who commit terrorist acts have very little Islamic knowledge,

This study identified 139 Muslim-Americans with a linkage to terrorist violence between September 11, 2001, and December 31, 2009, an average of about 17 people per year. The dataset contains information about both the offenders and the nature of their activity. All but one of the offenders are men. Their average age is 28. Almost two-thirds (65%) are under 30.

This research confirmed what has been observed in other studies of Muslim terrorists: most of those who engage in religiously inspired terrorism have little formal training in Islam and, in fact, are poorly educated about Islam. Muslim- Americans with a strong, traditional religious training are far less likely to radicalize than those whose knowledge of Islam is incomplete.

This puts a dent in the theories expounded by Islamophobes such as Spencer and company.

  1. Ustadh Says:

Thanks, this is certainly a must read. I imagine the Islamophobes will just brush this under the carpet.

  2. Oh no Says:

No no no no no. You’ve got it all wrong Emperor. Spinster the great scholar on Islam and his devout sidekick Pamela Geller have put in immense research for years coming to the conclusion that these terrurists are devout Muslims. Research included interviewing Dr. Andrew Bostom, Wafa Sultan, Nonie Darwish, and Bat Ye’Or. Spinster and geller came to the chilling conclusion that any Muslim who commits terrurist acts in the name of Allah, goes to the mosque five times a day, has a beard, wears hijab, goes to hajj, gives zakat, fasts in Ramadan, and also gave his/her shahadah is and always will be intentionally or unintentionally, willingly or unwillingly a terrurist.

  3. 1001 Muslim Inventions Says:

Much of the terrorism in Islam today is very recent, and it originates with the Muslim Brotherhood, not with Wahabism as most misled people believe.

This movement is a recent one, and doesn’t originate from the Quran. Even an Islamophobe like Daniel Pipes says that.

  4. Nabeela Says:

    Thanks for this reminder Emperor,

Of course we all know it, but for those who don’t and those who have Islamophobes feeding them lies, especially in the USA, this helps.

It is noteworthy that there is more ignorance about Islam in the USA, that’s why they’re having trouble fighting terrorism. Europe is much more savvy, and tackles this problem at the root, using the right techniques, Muslim connections, and their own ties to the Muslim World.

The reason for this disconnect from reality in the USA is because there is a well paid propoganda machine whose mission it is to lie and feed misinformation. MEMRI and SITE play a big role in this. Much of the information in the US about Islam comes either from these Likud linked Israeli formed “media” or from the likes of Robert Spencer, paid by another neo con (Horowitz) to lie.

There is also the Christian Right (Fox News, World Net Daily), who have their own agenda to propogate lies against Islam, support for Israel terrirotial expansion for the Armaggedon, for which they need to demonise Islam.

  5. Yusuf Says:

This was also made clear in “Who Speaks For Islam? What a Billion Muslims Really Think” by John L. Esposito and Dalia Mogahed.

Read the book! Real data, not speculation.

  6. Danios Says:

    Great article, Emperor.

  7. Leonora Says:

duh. this only proves (sort of) what we already know

  8. AbdulJabbar Says:

lol, written by David Shanzer, who is the Director of the Triangle Center of Terrorism and Homeland Security in the U.S.

It’s funny who you choose to trust when it comes to Muslims.

The inventors of Islamophobia want you to believe that fighting is not allowed in Islam and that those who do have no knowledge thereof. That’s the classic British Tactic “Turn people away from scholars, so we can reteach them our philosophy”

The guy who is responsible for upholding laws that call for racial profiling against Muslims and the spreading of Islamophobia across America, is the one Muslims like you turn to for advice ? He’s going to tell me about Islam now ? Like there is a shortage of scholars in the Ummah?

Assuming that a majority of ‘terrorists’ don’t know about Islam. What about the thousands of scholars all around the world who support these so-called “terrorists”. They’re probably just crazy? Didn’t get enough milk in childhood or something? What about well learned and trusted scholars that the entire Ummah respects such as Ibn Uthaymiyeen or the writer of the most renowned Tafsir of the Qur’an “Ibn Kathir” ? They also hold the same philosophy on Jihad, are they also uneducated on Islam ?

The only people educated are the scholars who are paid by the U.S. government such as Government affiliated organizations ISNA and CAIR ? Or directors of homeland security organizations ? Or wait perhaps Charles Kurzman ? A self-proclaimed scholar of Islam (who incidentally happens to be a Jew, well trusted by other famous Jews).

Or wait, there’s also Ebrahim Moosa: With a name and credentials like his, he has got to know about Islam. The same guy who is running Ford-Foundation funded projects against Islam (Wikipedia has more on that)

Once again, I implore you to be careful about who you trust. I know this is a tough time we live in, where most if not all of the media conglomerates are paid for by think tanks and governments for a simple purpose. Eliminate religious freedom.

You know this better than I do. You show how Media is spreading Islamophobia, what do you think is the purpose?. What is the motive? It’s to stop Jihad from ruining what they call ‘Democracy’. It’s to stop people from questioning leaders. It’s to establish a clouded Fascism under the guise of Democracy. The only thing that stands in their way is “Islam”. Islam says “There is no need for man made constitution”, and that leaves Man with no power over others. Islam leaves no opportunity for power-hungry fascists to rule over people because Islam hands the final judgment always over to God. “They” can’t stand that.

They are even willing to spread a ‘fake’ version of Islam as long as Muslims stop believing in Shariah and become submissive to humans because then Islam is no longer a threat to global control.

You might think I’m a brain washed crazie who has little or no knowledge of Islam, I will tell you this though. Study Islam yourself, and Allah-willing, you shall see where the Prophet (SAWS) stood on this issue and how strict it is. We call ourselves servants of Allah, but curse the Mujahideen.

What do you make of the story of Ka’ab (the jew who used to slander against the PRophet SAWS) ? Prophet SAWS ordered him to be assasinated. Not because he faught against Islam but because he wrote poems defaming Islam. If we now do the same thing against the Danish Cartoonist, we’re all of a sudden Terrorists? Following the PRophet (SAWS) in words and actions makes us now Terrorists ? And some how this guy is telling us that we have no knowledge of Islam ?

What about the way Sa’ad (RA) handled the case of the hypocrites in Madina? This isn’t made up stuff. It’s in all the Sahih Hadith’s you can pick up. It’s in Qur’an, it’s in tafsir of Qur’an. It isn’t some ’secret Al-Qaeda literature, that is only given to these ‘uneducated’ terrorists’ It’s common knowledge.

Prophet SAWS called for the public execution of hypocrites (from the ruling party of the country they were living in!). Why didn’t the Prophet (SAWS) say ‘we’re in contract with them, so let’s shutup and live our lives’. Why drastic measures?

What about the sayings of the PRophet (SAWS)? “Fighting in the cause of Allah will continue till the last day” (Bukhari). “A day will come when people will be afraid to fight in the cause of Allah, that day Islam will be weakened because the love of Jihad would be taken from the hearts of Muslims” (Sahih Bukhari).

What about “A caravan from among my people would continue to be on the right path and continue to fight in the way of Allah till the last day” (Bukhari).

Let’s ignore all that, and listen to David Shanzer?

  9. Ryan Says:

it said spare women and children, and allah loveth not transgressors. Can you actually provide evidence? You’re not even a real muslim, your like one of those losers ali sina uses to justify his rather weak arguements. and ka’ab was never assasinated.

  10. Ryan Says:

also, Islam says to be a loyal citizen to your host country even if they are predominately a religion you disagree with.

  11. IbnAbuTalib Says:

Abdul Jabbar:What do you make of the story of Ka’ab (the jew who used to slander against the PRophet SAWS) ? Prophet SAWS ordered him to be assasinated. Not because he faught against Islam but because he wrote poems defaming Islam.

Looking at it in the context of all reports, including the one which states that the Prophet(saw) did not take revenge on others (which makes it highly implausible that he would order the assassination of the Jewish poet simply because he composed derogatory poems about him), and consequently taking into consideration that poetry constituted a highly effective medium of galvanizing people, the only reasonable conclusion is that the Prophet(saw) had Kaab executed to protect the Muslims.

Abdul Jabbar:Assuming that a majority of ‘terrorists’ don’t know about Islam. What about the thousands of scholars all around the world who support these so-called “terrorists”. They’re probably just crazy?

Obviously the statement that thousands of scholars support terrorists is an exaggeration. Even if you are right, that still doesn’t justify terrorism. To say that something is right simply because the majority subscribes to it is tantamount to an argumentum ad populum.

Abdul Jabbar:You might think I’m a brain washed crazie who has little or no knowledge of Islam.

    Absolutely!

Abdul Jabbar:I will tell you this though. Study Islam yourself, and Allah-willing, you shall see where the Prophet (SAWS) stood on this issue and how strict it is. We call ourselves servants of Allah, but curse the Mujahideen.

Funny how you extol what allegedly thousands of scholars say and then encourage other people to study Islam for themselves. What exactly do you mean, to study Islam through its primary sources, or to study it through the opinions of scholars whose own views were largely shaped by their times and surroundings? Thank God there is no Islamic pope!

  12. Cassidy Says:

You’re right; it does say to spare women (who were often sold into slavery) however the part about children is a bit of a half truth, by the standard of those times a child was a pre pubescent, so children 13 and older were not spared.

Nova Scotia, Canada: Muslim association hosting symposium for women

SYDNEY — Understanding why some women practising their religion wear hijabs, while others wear habits, will be among the topics discussed at an event for women interested in discussing the role of their gender in modern society.

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Ladies Association of Sydney is hosting an invitation-only event for women Friday at the Membertou Trade and Convention Centre.

The presentation will include 10-minute talks on the Christian, Hindu and Muslim perspectives by three female speakers followed by dinner and a question-and-answer session.

“When you know more about each other’s religion then you think positively because you know the reasons behind that,” said Waseema Rehman, a Glace Bay family doctor who organized the event. “For example when a Muslim lady wears a scarf, or a hijab, if you don’t know why they are wearing it, other people might (think) ‘Oh, she must be an extremist.’

“She’s just doing it because she loves God.”

Rehman, who wears a head scarf, says Islam doesn’t tell women what to wear, although many women chose to cover up to show their affection for God.

She said in Canada, Muslim women often chose to show their faces as part of the social norm of the country.

Parallels of conservative clothing in religion can be drawn to Christianity, said Rehman, as nuns often cover their heads with a veil, and in Judaism men often cover the top of their heads with yarmulke.

Saima Haleem, a medical doctor practising in Membertou, said as a Muslim woman, she sometimes gets questions from people about her religious and cultural beliefs and practices. However, she added, more often than not people are afraid to ask for fear of offending.

The interfaith symposium is free and designed to offer women an opportunity to learn more about other faiths and cultures in a friendly environment, Haleem said, and it’s timely, especially after Quebec recently passed a law banning face coverings for people seeking public services.

Men are not invited to the interfaith symposium, Haleem said, because it’s organized by the ladies’ association and because of Islamic segregation rules. However, a men’s group is planning an interfaith symposium open to all in the fall.

“I find there’s a lot of misconceptions about Muslim women, like they’re only there for the men, to stay home and cook, but it’s not true,” she said, noting that five members of the women’s interfaith group are medical doctors.

Although the women’s event is by invitation only, anyone wishing to attend is asked to call Rehman at 537-2244, or email interfaith.sydney@gmail.com, at least three days before to see if spaces are available.

The devotees of a mosque yesterday obstructed the burial of an elderly woman of Ahmadiyya community at a graveyard in the city's Tejgaon Industrial area.

The body of Akimunnesa, 62, a resident of East Nakhalpara, was finally buried in a graveyard near Mohakhali bus terminal amid resistance from the devotees of Rahim Metal Jam-e-Mosque in the area.

Rafiq Ahmed, brother of the deceased, said they took the body to the graveyard of the mosque where their grand parents had been buried.

But the devotees and the people of the mosque committee barred them from burying the body saying Ahmadiyyas are not Muslim and the body of a non-Muslim could not be buried there, he added.

Devotees told reporters that the graveyard is used for the burial of the bodies of the Muslim community but not for non-Muslims.

Akimunnesa died as bricks from the rooftop of a six-storey building at East Nakhalpara fell on her head around 8:30pm on Saturday.

Ban the Burqa? - The Review of Religions

Ban the Burqa? - The Review of Religions

Ban the Burqa? - The Review of Religions

Ban the Burqa?

The burqa or hijab, an all-enveloping garment worn by Muslim women that leaves only the eyes exposed, has hit the headlines again! In an historical address to parliament on Monday, 22nd June, French President Nicolas Sarkozy strongly criticised the wearing of the burqa by Muslim women in France:

“The problem of the burqa is not a religious problem. It is an issue of freedom and dignity of women. This is not a religious symbol, it is a sign of subservience, it is a sign of lowering. I want to say solemnly, the burqa is not welcome in France. We cannot accept in our country women trapped behind a fence, cut off from social life, deprived of any identity. This is not the idea that we have of the dignity of women.”

The debate over Muslim women’s apparel is not new. In 2004, France passed a law banning students from conspicuous religious items, including Muslim headscarves, in schools. In December 2008, the European Court of Human Rights unanimously ruled that there was no human rights violation when a French school expelled two students for refusing to remove their headscarves. Last July, a Muslim woman’s citizenship application was denied because she had reportedly failed to assimilate to French culture and she practised a type of Islam found incompatible with French values.

So what does Islam say about the wearing of the veil. According to the Holy Qur’an, women:

…should pull down upon them their outer cloaks from their heads over their faces. That is more likely that they may thus be recognised and not molested. And Allah is Most Forgiving, Merciful. (Ch.33:V.60)

And say to the believing women that they restrain their looks and guard their private parts and that they display not their beauty or their embellishment except that which is apparent thereof, and that they draw their head coverings over their bosoms, and that they display not their beauty or their embellishment save to their husbands… (Ch.24:V.32)

Other religious texts also speak of veiling:

‘When Rebekah raised her eyes, she caught sight of Isaac and she swung herself down from off the camel. Then she said to the servant, ‘Who is that walking in the field to meet us?’ and the servant said ‘It is my master’. And she proceeded to take a head cloth and to cover herself.’ (Genesis: 24:64-65)

‘But every woman that prays or prophesies with her head uncovered shames her head for it is one and the same as if she were a (woman) with a shaved head. For if a woman does not cover herself let her also be shorn; but if it is disgraceful for woman to be shorn or shaved, let her be covered.’ (1 Corinthians: 11:5-6)

The Bible then treats the wearing of a veil as an inherently righteous undertaking. Perhaps President Sarkozy should look more closely at pictures of the Virgin Mary in the famous French gallery, the Louvre. He will note that she is often depicted in works of art with her head covered. Likewise it used to be obligatory upon Catholic women to don a headscarf while attending the church service. Today Christian nuns and Amish women continue to cover their heads.

The extent to which a Muslim woman covers her face may vary according to her situation and practical needs. However, the act of veiling is not considered a disgrace or a hindrance for a woman. Instead it is seen as honouring her and freeing her from the bondage of society and the obstacles that prevent her intellectual, moral, and spiritual advancement.

Veiling only becomes a sign of subservience when it is used by men to prevent women from fully participating in daily life. Sadly, some Muslim countries have allowed the perpetration of this belief through their cruel treatment of women. However, it must be noted that there is no law in Islam that punishes a woman for not veiling. It is her choice, not a sanction of her sexuality to be imposed by a man.

France’s problems with Europe’s largest group of Muslims are not because of the veil but rather social issues. The unemployment rate for immigrants and their French-born children is higher than the national average. Many children of immigrants complain of discrimination, saying they get passed over for jobs because they have “foreign-sounding” names. This frustration of many North African and black immigrants was evident in France’s three-week wave of riots in 2005.

France needs to engage in dialogue with its Muslim communities. But banning the burqa is not the way to do this. Indeed by deciding for these Muslims women that the burqa is a mark of subservience, he, like the Muslim men who force them to wear it, will be guilty of exerting his rights over theirs, hardly an expression of respecting the dignity of women.

Our Views on Terrorism

Our Views on Terrorism

"As far as Islam is concerned, it categorically rejects and condemns every form of terrorism. It does not provide any cover or justification for any act of violence, be it committed by an individual, a group or a government..... I most strongly condemn all acts and forms of terrorism because it is my deeply rooted belief that not only Islam but also no true religion, whatever its name, can sanction violence and bloodshed of innocent men, women and children in the name of God."

Friday Sermon - How to become grateful servants of God

Friday Sermon - How to become grateful servants of God

How to become grateful servants of God

Summary of Friday Sermon

Delivered by Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad at, the Head of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community

April 23 rd, 2010

NOTE: Alislam Team takes full responsibility for any errors or miscommunication in this Synopsis of the Friday Sermon

Today Hudhur delivered his Friday Sermon from Noor Mosque, Wigoltingen, Switzerland. Hudhur said he often draws our attention to become grateful servants of God. True gratefulness can only be generated when one has taqwa, an understanding of our object of creation and makes an effort to attain it. During his current European tour Hudhur has been giving sermons to draw attention to the same. He said the need to reiterate the subject arises because in spite of the facility of MTA which broadcasts Hudhur’s Friday Sermons every week as well as programmes for spiritual development, a hundred percent people do not avail of these and a good number of men, women and youngsters do not listen to the sermons regularly or if they do they assume that the sermon is only intended for the congregation to which it is directly addressed. On the contrary, Hudhur said, every single Ahmadi is addressed in each sermon. In particular those who have been Ahmadis for some generations have adopted this erroneous attitude. Whereas new Arab Ahmadis inform Hudhur that sometimes it feels as if Hudhur is delivering a sermon specifically for their situation. Listening to the Russian translation of Hudhur’s sermons on MTA, many Russian-speaking Ahmadis write to Hudhur and say how much the sermons affect them, in particular they find sermons on Tarbiyyat matters as if specific to their situation. In response to the sermon on weddings rituals they wrote to say that they too were embroiled in some rituals but after the sermon had turned towards reformation.

Hudhur said those Ahmadis who look out for the call of the Khalifa of the time, obey it and reform themselves. They eagerly listen to his advice and consider themselves as the addressee of his words, but some do not. Hence Hudhur reiterates the subject in each country that he visits. Hudhur said on his visit large congregation gathers for Friday Prayers and as each Ahmadi does have a seed of piety in him/her as well as a connection with Khilafat, therefore in spite of general weakness they eagerly participate during a Khalifa’s visit.

Hudhur said firstly he would like to draw the attention of Ahmadis who have come to live in Europe to become Abd e Shakur [servant of the Most Appreciating God]. Hudhur said Ahmadis have found mental peace and economic well-being in Switzerland, for this, they should be most grateful. God states: ‘…If you are grateful, I will, surely, bestow more favours on you…’ (14:8) Hudhur remarked what is gratefulness of God’s grace and its expression? Indeed, it is perfect obedience. It is to practice what God enjoins and to avoid what He forbids. A true believer spends his/her life as Abd e Shakur in order to be a recipient of Divine grace. For this one has to remember God’s favours with all one’s heart and mind throughout the course of one’s day and to continually remember Him, be always mindful of the blessings of God and glorify His name. Hudhur further explained that mere verbal professing is not sufficient, the expression of gratefulness of a true believer is from his/her every gesture and there is an effort to adopt humility and humility is inculcated when there is an awareness that all blessings are from God.

Good health is a blessing of God, we should utilise it to worship Him and to serve religion. He has given us abundance, prosperity, without being arrogant about it, we should spend in God’s cause. If we employ our God-given capacities and capabilities according to God’s teaching then it is an expression of gratefulness. God is Most Gracious, He enhances our capacities, grants us good health and bestows His nearness to an Abid (worshipper of God) and enables to attain the object of our creation. Indeed, man cannot even perform worship that gains acceptance with his own strength. Sincere gratefulness enables us to enhance in piety and taqwa.

God states: ‘And whatever good they do, they shall not be denied its due reward; and Allah well knows the God-fearing.’ (3:116). Hudhur explained that true piety is attained when one associates with all one’s being, one’s capacities and blessings to God’s grace. And how does God manifest as Al Shakur (the Most Appreciating) to such people? He states: ‘In order that He may give them their full rewards, and even increase them out of His bounty. He is surely Most Forgiving, Most Appreciating.(35:31). Hudhur explained that the term Shakur does not signify humility and gratefulness for God, in fact it signifies that He likes and appreciates the humility, piety and worship of His servants. Once man comprehends that when every piety and virtue is undertaken for God and then one turns to Him with utmost sincerity, God is Ever Merciful. His mercy encompasses everything; He envelops one in His mercy and sees each step in His direction with appreciation. How unfortunate if one leaves an Ever Merciful, Most Appreciating God and goes elsewhere.

Hudhur said if those who have settled in Switzerland reflect on their past, most will agree that coming here has been a blessing for them. No one leaves their home-country without a reason and for the Ahmadis the two main reasons to do so have been persecution in their home-country and economic migration. Hudhur said the governments of these [Western] countries have deemed your situations to be factual and have allowed you to stay here. This blessing is due to Ahmadiyyat. We should thus express our gratefulness by adopting an exemplary connection with Ahmadiyyat. If we do not appreciate our Community and do not pay heed to the word of the Khalifa of the time, we will we be distancing ourselves as well as our children from God.

Hudhur said stop, think and reflect; if the worldly benefit is taking you away from religion then there is no blessing in it, rather it is destructive and is a lack of appreciation of the blessings of God. We have taken the bai’at of the Imam of the age for whom each nation is waiting and for whom the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be on him) spoke most affectionately and sent his greetings. Is it a small matter to be associated with such a person? Certainly it is a huge honour and an appreciation of this honour would make us Abd e Shakur. Associating oneself to the Promised Messiah (on whom be peace) is not just an act of verbal professing, we have pledged allegiance to him in our bai’at and after him have done the same with the Khalifa of the time. Bai’at means selling and it signifies a pledge to sacrifice all one’s desires over God’s commandment, it signifies negating one’s own wishes and signifies considering God to be Ever Present.

Hudhur said he would briefly cite the conditions on which the Promised Messiah (on whom be peace) took our bai’at so that every one may self-reflect and self-examine how we are faring regarding this because God states: ‘….and fulfil the covenant; for the covenant shall be questioned about.’ (17:35)

The Promised Messiah (on whom be peace) took our pledge to abstain from all manner of shirk (associating partners with God) with sincerity of heart. Hudhur expounded that shirk does not only entail worship of stone idols, rather, there is also shirk which is hidden and is not so obvious. For example, disregarding Salat for the sake of one’s employment/business, to give precedence to worldly matters as if God is not Razaaq (the Great Sustainer) rather it is one’s business or employment that would sustain one. Sometimes one’s children go against the word of God, in such instance complying with them becomes shirk. Hudhur said some people are distanced from Ahmadiyyat because of their children. God states: ‘O ye who believe! let not your wealth and your children divert you from the remembrance of Allah…’ (63:10). Hudhur said this negligence is not an insignificant one; rather it leads one to destruction.

An Ahmadi is also expected to keep away from falsehood, fornication, adultery, trespasses of the eye, debauchery, dissipation, cruelty, dishonesty, mischief and rebellion. Hudhur said we need to constantly evaluate ourselves whether we are staying away from falsehood; some people have a very broad and erroneous understanding of falsehood. Hudhur said as regard fornication and trespass of the eye, through the media of video and internet vulgar and obscene programmes can be accessed. These affect young people in particular. Hudhur said this evil first encroaches in the name of freedom and open-mindedness and some unfortunate families get personally embroiled in it. Hudhur said first there is fornication of the mind and the eye which can lead to reality. At first parents do not pay attention and later on they are distraught. Children should not be allowed to watch vulgar programmes on the TV and careful eye should be kept on their internet use. If parents do not have the know-how/knowledge then Jama’at and the auxiliaries should organise awareness programmes about these and promote their respective members to affiliate with their auxiliary organisation so that they may go on to give precedence to faith over worldly matters. Parents should give complete cooperation in this as any weakness on their part can be cause of destruction. The greatest responsibility lays with the head of the household, the man. He should save his children from the Fire from which God has saved him. While the Muslim world is extremely restless for leadership, Ahmadis have the blessing of Khilafat that constantly guides. This blessing demands that we pledge to shun every evil and move onwards. We should always remember God states: ‘O ye who believe! save yourselves and your families from a Fire…’ (66:7). These days one comes across gaping moral ills, which are not considered immoral in the West. These are first followed in the name of open-mindedness, later it is realised they are neither entertainment nor freedom, rather these are pits of fire in the name of entertainment and freedom. Hudhur said to young people that they should understand it is not the object of their lives to get involved in these frivolities. By token of being an Ahmadi, there should be a distinct difference between them and others. Hudhur said all Ahmadis should avoid oppression and injustice. There should be mutual affection within the Community while avoiding deception of all kind and following Nizaam e Jama’at (the administrative system) of the Community. The beauty of our Community is with its Nizaam e Jama’at alone. Distancing oneself from it takes away the difference between us and the others. Some say they are most loyal to Khilafat but have differences with the Nizaam e Jama’at. They should understand the Nizaam e Jama’at is created by Khilafat. If anyone has any grievance they should write to the Khalifa of the time but no one is allowed to disregard the discipline of the Community. Similarly the office-holders also have a responsibility to keep a deportment of justice and affection.

Then attention is drawn to Salat, about which Hudhur expounded earlier. The fourth condition of bai’at is that one will not cause harm of anyone under the impulse of any passion. Then one will remain faithful to God in all circumstances, in sorrow and happiness, in adversity and prosperity. Hudhur said some people have been victims of the current economics crisis; however one must not leave God’s protection. One is expected to avoid worldly customs and lustful inclinations, submit oneself to the authority of the Qur’an, obey God and His Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be on him). One should entirely give up pride and vanity and spend life in humility.

The eighth condition of bai’at is that one shall hold faith, the honour of faith, and the cause of Islam dearer to one than one’s life, wealth, honour, children and all other dear ones. Hudhur said this is indeed a very significant condition which each Ahmadi should be mindful of. The outside world is watching us for we claim to represent the true picture of Islam. Therefore it is our responsibility to maintain Islam’s honour. We can only do successful Tabligh if our own models are pious. Today there is opposition to Islam all around us. It is our task to present a picture of true Islam to the world. Opponents of Islam have tried their ways in this country as well by banning the construction of minarets. Would the absence of minarets put a stop to criminal activities? Although a decision has been taken regarding the minarets, a momentum should be maintained about this issue. Write to newspapers, hold seminars. The law to ban minarets was made following a referendum, a referendum could also overturn it. Of course minarets do not have that much significance as they became a feature much later on [in Islamic history]. However, it is a matter of the honour of Islam. You should give them the example of Ahmadiyyat, that it is established in 195 countries of the world but there is never an instance of breaking the law or any participation in any unrest against the government of the land. We are the true picture of Islam. Hudhur said rather than be inward-looking, individual connections should be made [with the locals] by those who know the [local] language. Those who do not know the language can distribute literature. Each person will have to participate in this. Another issue that has been raised in Europe is that of Purdah. Our ladies and girls should organise a campaign to write to newspapers. Our girls did a good job in the UK and Germany regarding this. We should let the world know that Purdah is for the honour of a lady although some have distorted its form. Purdah is to uphold a lady’s honour. It is in the nature of women to wish for respect and Islam champions the dignity of women. Purdah is not coercion; it marks the individuality of Muslim women and upholds their honour. Hudhur said he would say to Ahmadi girls that they should not feel any complex in this matter. If they feel uncomfortable in light of the negative propaganda or choose to follow trends and abandon their Purdah then there can be no guarantee of their respect. Their respect is tied with the respect of faith.

Hudhur said he has related this incidence before where an Ahmadi girl was given a month’s notice by her boss to give up Purdah or lose her job. The girl prayed to God that she observed Purdah for His sake alone and sought His help. For a month the boss kept annoying the girl about the matter. After the month passed while the girl kept her job, the boss was either dismissed or transferred from his post. Hudhur said if one’s intention is good, God helps.

The ninth condition of bai’at is that one will remain occupied in the service of God’s creation and mankind. Hudhur said this will be truly fulfilled when we try to bring the world closer to God.

The last condition is that one will keep a bond of devotion and obedience with the Promised Messiah (on whom be peace) which will surpass all worldly relations and bonds. Hudhur said, again we need to reflect whether our relations and connections come in the way of our bond with the Promised Messiah (on whom be peace). We will ascertain this standard and level when we will adopt the teachings of the Promised Messiah (on whom be peace) and will display perfect obedience to Khilafat, the ‘Second Manifestation’. Complete obedience and loyalty to Khilafat alone will make us a bona fide member of the Community; otherwise, we will be simply donning a label. Hudhur said may it not be so that those who join the Community later get ahead and the Ahmadis whose forefathers gave tremendous sacrifices to start the well-springs are deprived of them.

God revealed to the Promised Messiah (on whom be peace) more than once ‘[God] will place those who follow you above those who disbelieve, until the Day of Resurrection.’ This is also a Quranic verse (3:56). However, the Promised Messiah (on whom be peace) said that one cannot fulfil the connotation of being his true follower unless one negates oneself in obedience to him. He went on to say that this illustrates that God has willed to create a Community for him that will indeed negate itself in his obedience.

Thus are the expectations of the Promised Messiah (on whom be peace). If we truly wish to form a bond with him we will have to endeavour to fulfil his expectations and to self-reflect. For every elderly, every woman, every youth to do so. Parents should watch over their children affectionately and make them aware of the teachings of the Promised Messiah (on whom be peace) and make the difference between Ahmadis and non-Ahmadis clear to them. The administration of the Jama’at and the auxiliaries should make practical programmes. If we spend our lives in seeking the world, this would be ungratefulness. May God enable every Ahmadi to be a true Ahmadi; one who always partakes a measure of God’s grace.

We are reaping the harvest of the seeds of hatred sown in the seventies and eighties. Pakistan is becoming an increasingly intolerant nation where religious and sectarian minorities live in fear and are awarded little or no protection by the state. Difference is unacceptable to the obscurantists who want everyone to toe their line. And if that takes intimidation, torture or even murder, then so be it, for no option is unavailable to the self-righteous who believe that they alone have seen the light.

This mindset is not limited to the Taliban who kill in the name of religion. There is no shortage in Pakistan of sectarian and other militant outfits that feel justified in murdering Shias, Christians and Ahmadis — or indeed anyone who doesn’t share their views. Most of these organisations have their genesis in the Zia era, a dark chapter in the country’s history which is responsible for rending our social fabric and fanning the flames of intolerance.

Take the case of Friday’s bloody events in Quetta. First the son of a prominent Shia leader was shot dead outside a bank. And when his body was taken to hospital, a suicide bomber blew himself up outside the emergency ward. Responsibility for the deadly attack was taken by the banned Lashkar-i-Jhangvi, an offshoot of the Sipah-i-Sahaba Pakistan.

It is even more extreme in its views than the outlawed SSP (now called the Ahl-i-Sunnat Waljamaat) and has a history of killing Shias and destroying their property in various parts of Punjab. The Lashkar-i-Jhangvi is active elsewhere in the country as well, as evidenced by Friday’s killings in Quetta. Consider also the plight of Ahmadis living in Faisalabad. As this paper reported on Saturday, the government is looking the other way even as they are robbed, threatened and killed. This terror spree is attributed to the defunct SSP which became emboldened when some Ahmadi students were expelled from a medical college after being falsely accused of blasphemy.

Instead of taking the accusers to task, the authorities punished the victims. Meanwhile a shadowy cleric has apparently decreed that robbing and killing Ahmadis is permissible.

The Punjab government needs to act, and act now, to protect Faisalabad’s Ahmadi community and other minorities in the province. But that is perhaps asking too much of an administration whose law minister consorts openly with known extremists. Organisations such as the SSP and Lashkar-i-Jhangvi are proscribed only in name. Their strength remains undiminished and the leader of the Ahl-i-Sunnat Waljamaat is granted audiences with provincial chief ministers and at least one governor. This double-game must end if extremism is to be curbed.

Indonesia: House Roots for Upholding Blasphemy Law as it Stands

Legislators overseeing religious affairs say they expect the Constitutional Court today to issue the “correct” verdict in regard to the 1965 Blasphemy Law — to dismiss the request for its review and put a stop to sensitive debate that has increased tensions between religious hard-liners and rights activists.

Abdul Kadir Karding, chairman of the House of Representatives’ Commission VIII, expressed his concern on Sunday over the possible social impact should the court agree to review or annul the law. Any change to the law, Abdul said, would lead to debate and trigger disharmony between religious groups.

“It would be hugely negative and the benefits minuscule if the law is to be reviewed,” the National Awakening Party (PKB) legislator told the Jakarta Globe.

After at least 12 hearings filled with controversy, the Constitutional Court is expected to rule at 2 p.m. today on a judicial review request filed by human rights groups.

“What if there are religions with only one or two followers conducting rituals, much like rituals in Islam or Christianity, but these people believe in neither Islam or Christianity?” Abdul said. “Of course people will get mad.”

Toward the end of March, members of the hard-line Islamic Defenders Front assaulted four people in the basement of the Constitutional Court on the last day of arguments in the case. The court’s chief, Mahfud MD, has himself made controversial statements linked to attempts to influence him, made by religious groups petitioning against the law’s annulment.

“As long as the statements are made within the courtroom hearings, we will accept them,” Mahfud previously said.

“Nothing outside is acceptable. If expert witnesses from Mecca are presented, we will accept them [in the courtroom]. Even if expert witnesses from hell are presented, we cannot refuse them.”

The 1965 Blasphemy Law recognizes only six religions: Islam, Protestantism, Catholicism, Buddhism, Hinduism and Confucianism. All others are officially banned.

House Commission VIII legislator Hasrul Azwar said on Sunday that the review of the law would “tarnish the sanctity” of the recognized religions. He said he understood that some groups believed the law violated the right to freedom of worship, but said no one should be allowed to defame a religion.

“In the case of the Ahmadiyah [minority sect], they say they are Muslims but that their last prophet is not Muhammad. That’s blasphemy,” the United Development Party (PPP) legislator said.

“Members of the entire House Commission VIII share the same beliefs as I do. [Any sane person] would want this law maintained as it is.”

In 2008, the government used the law to ban the Ahmadiyah, a minority Islamic sect, because its members held that its founder, Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, was the last prophet of Islam, a claim that contradicts mainstream Muslim beliefs.[*]

Minister of Religious Affairs Suryadharma Ali has opposed the review of the law, arguing that putting no limits to the establishment of religions would result in people “openly declaring new prophets and angels.”

Ignatius Mulyono, chairman of the House Legislation Body, said legislators should prepare for the court’s outcome.

“If there are some articles annulled, the commission should make the changes required, and along with the government we will discuss it, irrespective of legislators’ own personal beliefs,” he said.

Mahfud on Sunday guaranteed that the court’s decision would be independent, and that the verdict would be based not on religious biases but the study of articles in the Constitution.

“I threw out all the letters from clerics and community groups that weren’t directly addressed to me during a court hearing,” he said.

“The court can only decide based on legal facts in a hearing. Beyond that, nothing else will be taken into consideration.”

Legislator Eva Kusuma Sundari, from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), told the Globe that although she was not of the same opinion as her colleagues on Commission VIII, she was pessimistic the court would approve the review.

“The issue is not about justice, but power,” Eva said. “Consequently, once we ratified the law on human rights, we should work on related laws, including the blasphemy law.”

She said it was very unfair that the nation only recognized six religions, when one’s religious belief was a personal matter and people should be allowed to choose their own faith. She said the right to freedom of worship was a basic one that the state should respect.

Some 570 people from several countries gathered at the Basharat Mosque of Pedro Abad on Friday and Saturday to celebrate the Twenty-fifth Annual Convention of the Ahmadiyya Community in Islam.

The convention was attended by the supreme leader and fifth Caliph of the religious community, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, who delivered several speeches which were broadcast live through television to more than 150 million faithful and more than 170 countries.

Speaking in Urdu language on various aspects of the topic, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad explained verses that are mentioned in the Koran, the sacred book of the Muslim community, about the treatment of women and improving the human quality to "become better people.”

His speeches were being simultaneously translated in Spanish, Arabic and Bengali.

“The fifth Caliph of the Ahmadis addresses spiritual issues, not any political and worldly matters,” explained a representative of the community to this newspaper.

The supreme leader of the Ahmadis asked for prayer for the two members of the community recently murdered in Pakistan, a country the community originally belongs to but they are persecuted by the current power structure.

Since 1984, 107 Ahmadis have been killed and 719 detained.

Ahmadiyya Movement in Islam was founded by Mirza Ghulam Ahmad of Qadian (India) in 1889.

Among those in attendance were representatives from several provinces.

This is the second visit of the Caliph to Pedro Abad. The previous was in 2005.

Changing Trends: Khalifa of Islam arrives in Italy, Pope leaves Rome for Malta

Hazrat Ahmad explained that when Christianity spread in Italy after the suffering of the Unitarian Christians for many hundreds of years, it was helped by the concept of Trinity that came to be hugely accepted. Now Ahmadi Muslims have to spread Ahmadiyyat, the true Islam in the country and change the concept of Trinity back to Unity of God.

The Khalifa of Islam and the Spiritual Head of the Worldwide Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, arrived in Italy and delivered his Friday Sermon at Baitul Tauheed Mosque, ‘the House of Oneness [of God]’, at San Pietro in Casale in Italy, the Muslim Television Ahmadiyya (MTA) Reported.

San Pietro in Casale is a municipality of about 12,000 inhabitants, located in the Province of Bologna in the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy.

According to the MTA news, His Holiness, Hadhrat Ahmad reminded the members of the Community during his Friday Sermon that Italy is a huge responsibility for the Ahmadi Muslims living in the country.

He reminded the members to be mindful that they live in a country a part of which has been the centre of Catholicism and where papacy is established [Vatican], albeit it is reduced to a paradigm of worldliness and a large majority of Europeans are Catholics who do accept the Pope.

Many believe that the concept of Trinity prevailed because of its compatibility with pagan beliefs of multiple gods. Similarly, many other Christian traditions can be found to have emerge from the pagan belief-set.

As Hazrat Ahmad delivered the sermon in San Pietro in Casale, the chief of Catholicism, Pope Benedict left Rome to go on an Apostolic Journey to Malta.

The Catholic News Agency (CNA) reported that the Holy Father sent a telegram of good wishes to the President of the Republic of Italy, Giorgio Napolitano and informed the President about this being a "providential occasion" for his pilgrimage to Malta.

According to CNA, the Pontiff looked forward to meeting many "brothers and sisters in the faith" at a historic place where the apostle Paul once was shipwrecked and meet with representatives of the Maltese people.

Unhindered by the cloud of volcanic ash that had interrupted flights in northern Italy since Saturday morning, the Holy Father took off for Malta where he arrived around 5:00 PM local time.

However, in Malta, the pontiff has been also eagerly awaited by a group of men, allegedly abused by Roman Catholic clergy, who hope that this weekend will mark a turning point for them and their Church.
